Can only speak to my experiences with those three drugs.

Ritalin - Started out on this one, twice an day (don't remember the dosage). Did OK - had more energy, less trouble w/EDS. Problems - didn't like having to keep up with 2nd dose during the day, it let me down with a crash (very sudden transition from OK to "narc-y" as h***), and the fact that in the US Ritalin is a scheduled drug which means there are restrictions on how the prescription is handled. Was on Ritaln for about a year. No problems with side effects.

Cylert - Took 37.5 mg once a day for about 5-6 years. Did OK on this one, too. The let-down was much easier than on Ritalin. Was able to drive for about 2-3 hrs. at the most before I HAD to pull over and take a nap. Sometimes took an extra 1/2 tablet, and occasionally an extra full tablet, on a very bad day or a day when I needed to be alert for a long time, e.g., when I had to pull an all-nighter at work. No side effects that I was aware of, although Cylert is currently much in disfavor because long-term use can totally WRECK your liver.

Provigil - Have been on 200 mg. in the AM, supplimented as needed by another 100-200 mg as needed. Best so far. Am more alert than with either of the other 2 meds., and I have driven for up to 6 hrs. without napping. Also, I seem to be less tense than I was on Cylert (although when I was taking Cylert I wasn't aware of being tense!). The Provigil lets me down nice and easy, too, a long transition between being alert and hitting the narcolpesy wall. Only side effects are an occasional (2-3 times/day) dry mouth and smelly urine.

I can't speak to what is available north of the border. Perhaps somebody from up that way will chime in and fill you in...

Let us know how things turn out. Hope this new neuro. turns out to be a pleasant surprise.
