Posted by Nikki on October 02, 2000 at 16:34:03:I am a newbie. My GP sent me to the Neurologist because he thinks I have Narcolepsy, and the Neurologist sent me to the sleep clinic, which had no appts. available until 10/29/00. I am leaving for Dallas 10/14 'cause my 1st grandchild is being born...and I am driving there from NC.
This is what I don't understand...for almost 2 yrs now I've thought I had insomnia because I couldn't sleep at night, but would "doze" off during the day. Well, it actually felt more like "blanking out". Now, in the last 2 months my symptoms have worsened and even in the last 2 weeks have gone further downhill. Now, when I blank out, I am "frozen" for a couple of minutes upon waking ("coming to")and I actually have to use my hands to re-position my head to a normal position. Several people have told me I am slurring my words. In conversations lately I have found myself talking to someone on the phone and realized I am saying something inane...something that has nothing to do with the conversation. This was sooo weird - I went to take a sip of my coffee, and somewhere between picking up the cup and getting it to my mouth, I "blanked out" and wound up spilling hot coffee all over myself. That's the same way I put the cigarette burn on my keyboard and burnt my finger at the same time...which is what brought me around. There are more symptoms, like blurred vision and more.. All in all, from what research I've done on the net it seems I do have narcolepsy. My question is, what is the usual progress of symptoms? How did I go from 2 years of thinking this was insomnia - to the (I think) rapid onset of the other symptoms in the last 2 months that definately seem to be narcolepsy? I just turned 53. I have, since high school, had an irregular sleep pattern, in that, I would go ninety-to-nothing for weeks with little or no sleep and then would "burn-out" and sleep non-stop for a week or more. Was that narcolepsy too? I am worried about my long (18 hr.) drive to Dallas. I am hoping my Dr. will give me just enough of something to keep me awake for just 5 days...that will get me to Dallas, as I plan to make it a 2-3 days drive. I am hoping to go to the sleep clinic down there, since I'll be in town about a month. Any suggestions on what med. to ask the Dr. for? Any feedback on this will be appreciated. Thanks all - Nikki
