I'm with Earl and Merrill.
Personally, I couldn't drive the journey you're undertaking. Drugs rarely "fix" our symptons, they generally just take the edge off. I think most (if not all) of us on drugs still must take naps.
I experienced some of my worst times since my dx when I was trying to function as if I didn't have narcolepsy. I took a lot of Dexedrine trying to overpower the sleepiness. It didn't work.
Anyway, Dexedrine is a controlled substance, so the prescribing physician has to put an approved dx on the prescription to keep it legal. Because you're waiting to see what your dx is, the choices will be limited. Rightfully so, we wouldn't want doctors giving us pills for disorders we don't have.
Do you have someone who could accompany you? or drive you? use the bus?
Whatever you decide, be safe. The sleep clinic may be able to answer some of your questions. Reading some of the past forums could give you some insight (or they may confuse you-this sure isn't an exact science).
Keep us posted.
