Surgery done-Stanford-post op 1 month UPPPwflap & Genio

Posted by JLM on June 10, 2000 at 19:30:29:

Went for return visit with surgeon. He pulled out my last stich on roof of my mouth. The UPPP part is healed and no problems. The Genio part is tingling and some sharp refered pain to the front chin and lower teeth. Doc says that means the nerve endings that were severed are reattaching.

My problem now is because of previous TMJ, overstretching of my mouth during surgery, using my tongue and facial muscles more from chewing and talking, is I have aggravated all inside facial muscles on my right side. It has created pain and swelling again. I saw my TMJ physical therapist and he anaylized and treated with ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and showed me where to massage inside my mouth, and also hold ice water in. We are trying to stop the spasms and calm down the area. Decision has been made to go back to soft foods and calm down the swelling and pain when I open my mouth. Unfortunately that means talking as well.

Prior to 4 days ago everything was progressing well. I see this as a minor setback (though it hurts mighty well). Officially I am suppose to have 2 more weeks of swelling anyway. If anyone else has experienced this type of problem I would appreciate the feedback.
