Brian, what you gotta do is continuously swallow crushed ice. Swallowing is painful, but if you let the crushed ice melt down your throat it will bring the swelling down and numb the pain. Also, you need to keep ice under your chin, around the clock. I had a tonsillectomy seven weeks ago. The first week was painfully hellish, but keeping ice going down the throat and an ice pack underneath the chin made things 40% better.
You should make two to three ice packs. It's easy to do. What you do is take an ordinary washcloth and soak it full of water, fold it into a quarter so that it can fit into a Ziplock baggie, put it in the baggie, zip it up, then put that baggie into another baggie to prevent leaks. Then, freeze it. Make two to three ice packs because each frozen washcloth will melt in a couple of hours.
Place the frozen washcloth baggie under your chin. Sometimes it's worth stuffing the frozen baggie into a sock so that it feels softer to the skin, but you can use any household linen cloth to wrap around the baggie.
Keep applying cold compresses to your chin and neck area, and disolve crushed ice at the back of your tongue for as much as you can. I read somewhere in this forum that swallowing actually helps heal the throat wounds faster, and it seemed to do well for me.
Hope you feel better. After day ten, you won't regret the surgery anymore.
Best, Louise
