If you start to get dehydrated your lips will dry out and your saliva will be very thick. It is difficult to stay hydrated with just ice chips and popcicles. I am 7 days post-op for UPPP and tonsilectomy and have been able to drink some water from day 1. What type of pain medication are you on? They gave me Lortab in liquid form which works pretty well for the first couple of hours. I try to drink lots of water within the first hour after taking the pain medication when it is easiest to swallow. As stated in the other responses to your post, it will get worse before it gets better. Try to drink as much as you can and keep up with your pain medication. I have found it best to set my alarm at night and get up every four hours to take it. I slept too long early on and paid for it with pain when I woke up.
Good luck and hang in there.
