Matt, there is a lot worse than sounding 80 at 34, try being 35 in an 80 year old body! I don't know your case and am not a doctor, but I do know what apneas have done to my insides. Please, if you need a trach DON"T PUT IT OFF! Yes you can die from untreated apnea. And you don't have as much time to wait as you may think. Each event takes some part of you health along with it. After being trached, I have been in the hospital 3 times, had to be vented, which right now for the timebeing I am on full time, and on last friday had a pacemaker put in that will stay. I am a 35 year old female. I don't blame everything that is wrong with my health on apnea, some of my problem was due to starvation diets and diet pill for years and some from leaving apneas untreated ie,needing a trach ad putting it off. If I had it to do over I would have gone from the doctors office 3 years ago when my doc first said trach, to the hospital then screaming, "trach me TODAY"! It really is a very little thing to be such a life saver.
