I just had a flap trach and a UPPP on June 20. I am overweight too. My doctors had a cardiac doctor on call and also very important, I had a doctor for the anestesia (sp?) not a nurse but a doctor. The issues involved with the UPPP and your weight warrant a doctor in my humble opinon.

I went in on noon and was in intensive care for two days (this was due to my trach, not the UPPP!). I will level with you and say that your throat will be sore. I have not experienced the pain others talked about, but 10 full days after surgery, I am just starting to try solid food. It hurts to eat anything other than applesauce, watermelon, that sort of thing. But I have not been as hungry as I thought I would. My throat is improving as well as my trach. I am on Augmenten as my white count went up after surgery, but has come down nicely shortly after... Xrays look ok, no fever.. I go in tomorrow to have my staples removed. I am looking forward to eating my favorite foods again, but have really cut down. I have had a few breathing problems, but nothing serious. A trach and UPPP at the same time is certainly no picnic.. I had so many new things coming at me all at once. I have put in two marvelous days in a row of deep sleep. I mean I look at the clock when I close my eyes, then when I open them, its 5:30 or so... no hourly potty trips, no constant waking. I am glad to see a payback. Biggest problem is to get comfortable with my head and neck. I started to take my trach out now for a while at night. I hope sharing my experiences helps!
