I had both done as well on June 10th. One of my nostrils was 90% blocked, and the tonsils were pretty large as well. Was also diagnosed with hypoapnea instead of apnea. Had the "down the nose" test but not the standing x-ray test, wish I'd known about that beforehand. Still my tonsils were visibly large enough that I was comfortable with the decision to take them out.
I realize surgery often doesn't have great success rates, but of all the sleep surgeries I get the impression people are more positive on the septoplasty and tonsillectomy than others. In my case, I couldn't use the CPAP because of my deviated septum, so I figured that at a minimum at least it would allow me to go to CPAP if not cure me.
As to how my sleep is, I'd say I think there's definite improvement but the jury is still out. I remember waking up significantly less frequently during the night, though I think I still may be waking up. My sleep schedule has been all over the map lately, so that doesn't help. Also it's only been two weeks since the nasal splints have come out, and I think there's still crud forming in my nose -- it's not as clear as when I first left the doctor's office (but I do have a followup scheduled to suction stuff out).
All in all though, the septoplasty does make a noticeable difference in day-to-day life and also helps in CPAP tolerance -- this surgery is probably a no-brainer if an ENT does the proper test and confirm there's a fair amount of blockage. Besides the recovery isn't bad -- it's the tonsillectomy recovery that's not fun. I'm still happy I did both because getting massive tonsils out of the way has got to be a good thing for the airway...
