I just reread the pamphlet that my doctor gave me regarding the recovery & it states that one should initially avoid salty, highly seasoned, sharp or acidic foods. It does suggest chewing gum on days 2 thru 10 to keep the pharyngeal muscles in motion (thus "decreasing the muscle spasms & decreasing the pain"). I didn't chew gum & didn't notice any muscle spasms.

Eating salty foods early on doesn't seem to make sense to me (wouldn't salt & acid make the pain feel worse? 'pouring salt on an open wound'). I can understand trying to eat something soon to keep your strength up & thus speed up healing. After my surgery, I had liquids (soup) the first few days & moved up to more substantial foods as I felt that I was able (and I chewed the food real well before swallowing).
