In alot of different surgeries, they want you in physical therapy the next day. for example I had a shoulder surgery and had known people who had knee replacements that went into physical therapy the day after the procedure. Eating after UPPP is supposed to be the same thing. In theory, the sooner you use the muscle, the less stiffness sets in and the quicker the recovery. So thats why they want you to eat.

Now having said all of that, there is no way in hell I could have eaten right after my surgery. Drank alot of ensure and worked my way up from there over the next two weeks.
