Posted by Shadoe on August 08, 2002 at 17:59:47:Hello all...It's been a while since I posted here. I was Diagnosed with UARS back in November, and here's the story since: Tried on the Nasal CPAP (Remstar Pro) with ramp from 4-8. Failed miserably with daily sinus headaches and "gastric distention pains"...I ended up missing more work from that than the UARS. I underwent UPPP with septoplasty/turbinates/tonsils 3/6/02 after a fight with the insurance company. I haven't noticed a difference at all. Revisited my sleep doc who referred me to an oral surgeon for fitting of an oral appliance (he wanted to keep trying cpap machines, but I persisted)...I have to go for another sleep study before the appliance is approved.
While at the Oral Surgeon's office, he took cervical neck xrays which showed my retropharyngeal airway to be 5 mm (normal is 11). Here is the root of my problem. He made the point that perhaps the MMA may be the best thing for me as I am only 29 years old. He operates out of South Jersey (well respected oral surgeon for one of the local sports teams) and made it sound as though it isn't that tough a surgery to do as he's done many of them (he says that he doesn't "wire" the jaw shut).
My question is this. I'm only about 10 miles from the Univ. of Pennsylvania medical center. They have a great website from their oral surgeons on their MMA/GA surgeries. Has anyone out there gone there for surgery? It's a few thousand miles from here to Stanford, but I'd do anything to get rid of this damn problem. Let me know
Shad
