This firm area will probably get firmer as the scar tissue develops. This tightening effect is beneficial in that it creates more airway. Eventually, it becomes more pliable. Also, there is lots of softer tissue around the area to lend flexibility. I know what you are going through. I was pretty agitated after the stitches disolved and that feeling of tightness and gag reflex was there. The tightness DOES pass with time, the gag reflex will pass as well. Your mouth, which you had for many years, has been refigured. Your brain needs to come to terms with it. The best advice I can give you is to try not to think about it. If doing a certain thing with your tongue causes a gag reflex, don't do it. Stay busy and keep your mind off of the new sensations and in time they will be gone.
