Tonsillectomy: How long to heal?

Posted by JDinSV on August 09, 2002 at 22:30:42:

Hi,

Hopefully I have the corect forum now. Still just learning the site.

My tonsils had been very large since I was a kid. Getting tonsilitis and strep all the time. Also allergies big-time. After a sleep study with results of "severe obstructive sleep apnea" (Min O2 sat 83%, snoring, respiratory disturbance index 52.2) my doctor recommended a tonsillectomy. I was okay with it since they had been getting infected and their sheer size just seemed to bother me. After the surgery the doc said he also trimmed the "pillars".

Well, I'm 7 weeks past the surgery, and sleeping much better. Yeah! But I'm wondering how long is it expected to take to completey heal? I'm still sensitive in the surgery area. Not pain really, just sensitive. And it is still kinda red back there. A little raw, I guess. My doc had me schedule a follow up 3 months after surgery. "After I was completely healed". But this seems so long. I'm a 40 yr old male, diabetic, 40 lbs over. I know that this can mean I take longer to heal than a average person, but this seems pretty long.

Thanks,

JD
