I was a big snorer for fifty years. No apnea. Had UP3 on 6/27/02. Tonsils and uvula removed completely. It was very painful and had bleeding complications. I am 73 so it could have been due to age. Snoring is no more so that worked fine.
If you decide to have the surgery, look up on medscape.com all possible complications. During my surgery they used a clamped "gag" to keep my tongue out of the way. This caused injury to the hypoglossal nerve resulting in a swollen tongue and partial paralysis of the tongue. Difficulty speaking, chewing and swallowing. They estimate 3-6 months for recovery. Some of the reports on the medscape site are of permanent paralysis. Mine is improving slowly. One report (J Laryngol Otol 2002 May; 116(5):389-91) describes causes and suggests precautions to avoid nerve injury. Be sure your surgeon is aware of the potential for this injury.. Also, this injury can be caused by intubation during anaethesia process. Except for this outcome, I am pleased with the results of the surgery; however all the things you read on this site about pain etc. are true.
