Hman,
I used two types of oral appliances for my OSA. I used the TAP and the Herbst. Both of them seek to overcome the recessed lower jaw and narrow airway. After a sleep study with one that showed a reduction (but not to a safe level) in my RDI, I chose BIPAP, followed by surgery at Stanford. The oral appliances work for mild to moderate apnea. They also cause jaw problems. A dentist that made my appliances told me that upwards of 70% of patients develop difficulty making their back teeth contact with long-term use. They can also cause teeth movement and jaw disfunction. I came to see them as temporary measures on the road to a structural fix (IE the MMA.) Good luck and keep getting sleep studies until you know you are safe.
