How long is trach change painful?

Posted by Jody on September 19, 2002 at 00:34:35:

I had a tracheostomy done in March of this year and the first trach change I almost passed out the pain was so bad, that part has not changed. I was trached with the same type and size which, my ENT tells me is the best. I think I may be sleeping better if nothing touches my trach at night. I do find myself waking about every hour to clean the thick sticky secretions. I have ask my ENT if I could have an infection???? He said, I just need to not think about my trach so much???? I use a humidifer and it doesn't seen to help much. My stoma is bright RED and so painful.

Last month I tried to go back to work part time and found I could not because of the secretions being so bad. Not only can I not stay capped at times I have to take the inner cannula out and and clean it twice in an hour and that means new trach dressing ties and all because they are in a mess. I can't go any place.
I have gone to my regular M.D. and he will not even talk about my trach. The only trach advice I get from him is to see my ENT. I go to see my ENT and all he says is, you are thinking about it too much and jurks it out and replaces it and that is the WORST just the WORST. I think I can stand everything else but that pain OH! GOD! Can someone tell me how long? Is it this way forever? Before, I had the trach put in I was thinking, ok, a little pain for a couple of weeks, clean it, cap it and cover it, go on with life. I had no idea. I can't cap because I can't breathe, I cough and blow bubbles and I am never not in pain. Please, tell me it does get better.
