This type of surgery has a fairly low chance of curing obstructive sleep apnea. It can occasionally make things worse as well. Having said that, the Stanford team uses this procedure in conjunction with a procedure called a Genioglossus advancement. The combined procedure has about a 67% chance of cure in mild to moderate OSA. This is the phase 1 of their two phase protocol. There is another procedure called the MMA or maxillary mandibular advancement that they use in the event of incomplete treatment in phase 1. For those who follow the treatment protocol, there is a better than 90% chance of cure even when dealing with severe OSA. Check them out at Sleepsurgery.com. If you take the surgical route, be aware that you might need more than one surgery to beat this, but there are plenty of success stories out there.
