rkf,
Questions to ask are things like- do they think you are a good candidate for major improvement or cure from the MMA? How many have they done? How much appearance change do they expect? etc. As to the recovery: I found it less acutely painful than the GA/UPPP, though I think it was the UPPP that REALLY hurt. That said, the UPPP can be a critical piece to the upper airway reconstruction process for a lot of patients. Did you have the UPPP? I think the MMA was dealable due to the fact that cutting bone produces numbness, not pain. Having said that, there were a few days that I was in pain that Tylenol could not quell. I know this because, I was unhappy with the effects of the major pain killer I was given and toughed it out with the tylenol. I have a low tolerance for pain, and toughing it out was an option. If you don't have any problems with the meds, you will not experience undue pain. You will be very uncomfortable however for almost two weeks. One thing that may be a factor is the skill of the surgeons. Recovery: I spent a little over 5 weeks with braces on. During that time I gradually went from straight liquid to mushy stuff, to soft foods that I could "gum" as I was not allowed to chew for 6 weeks. I went back to work in a talk all day job at 7 weeks. The recovery was more monotonous than anything else. The procedure really takes it out of you, though not super painful, it is a MAJOR shock to the system. All I did was feed myself and walk for the first 2 weeks with the occasional trip to the movie theater post 3 weeks. Choking sensation: If I ever tried to sleep sitting up or on my back before the surgeries, I would choke myself straight awake. I never experienced this feeling while awake. I can now drift off lying flat on my back, sleep and dream as well. I would definitely do it again. The chance to be happy and rested without machinery is a chance worth taking for me. In fact, if I am not totally cured, I'll probably head back for the hyoid if somno won't do it. In my case, it looked like a design flaw that required the help of special carpenters. I say this because I was never even slightly overweight, and never snored. My obstruction was so low in the throat that there was no noise associated with it. There is definitely a lot more room for my tongue now.
