2 Weeks Post Surgery

Posted by Rip van Winkle on March 19, 2003 at 16:42:12:

Well, today is two weeks post surgery for me and I've put off posting my story long enough. Just a quick recap: I was diagnosed with an RDI of 34 and had UPPP, Tonsillectomy, Somno to tongue, Hyoid and Genio-glossus advancement.

I had studied up on the procedures and read everyone's posts here. I was prepared intellectually but was definitely not prepared for the mental and emotional zap this put on me. All the drugs really mess up your systems! I was in the hospital a bit longer than planned (2 days in ICU and 2 more in regular room) and dread to hear what my insurer is going to say about that. I hope I don't get stuck with a huge bill.

With the drugs the pain was never unbearable but it definitely comes back around the 8th or 9th day. I am completely pain free now and am eagerly waiting for these stitches to dissolve. I'm still being careful of what I eat, but at least I am off the jello/pudding diet! The only external scar from the hyoid is healing very nicely.

Most importantly, I feel like it is much easier to breath. I'm no longer using my CPAP and hope I don't ever need it again. At this time I find I still need to sleep propped up or else I wake up choking, but that's supposed to get better as the healing continues. I started back at work on monday and generally feel like I am waking up easier than I had been. Overall, things are looking good and I hope to see continued improvement as I heal.
