Posted by babydoc on March 21, 2003 at 14:15:07:I had a UPPP + tonsils on the 18th and am finally feeling half decent again. Thanks for everyone who has provided their feedback. The biggest thing I'd emphasize are cloraseptic spray to deaden the throat, and rice porriage to sooth irritation & provide painless nutrition. Here's my highlights:
Day 1 (operation) Surgery went well. No nausea post-op, but I got a pre-emptive nausea patch based on prior oral surgery experience. Very little bleeding. Was able to talk, drink a small amount. Slept most of day.
Day 2 Throat swelling up made talking and drinking difficult. On narcotic pain killers, but that didn't deaden the scratchy feeling in my throat. Struggled to keep hydrated without hurting my throat too much. At rest my throat is fine, but talking or swallowing hurts. I'm very surprised the narcotics aren't working. Used ice bags on the neck a lot to keep down swelling. Popsicles OK, but still hard to get down. Found ensure coated the throat and was soothing despite the poor taste. Gatorade tended to sting. Taking Vioxx daily & antibiotics every 4 hrs. Lots of mucus, some blood, hard to swallow, preferred to spit out. Stopped talking due to irritation.
Day 3 Finally figured out I needed to use Cloraseptic to deaden the throat -- that helped hugely. Ice bags still helping. Started gargling with Hydrogen Peroxide -- didn't hurt and seemed to clear up mucus temporarily. Started eating an overboiled rice porriage and that felt really good -- left a nice soothing coating. Still not talking. Still lots of mucus but blood all but gone. Using narcotics, vioxx, antibiotics, but none has any immediate noticeable benefits.
Day 4 Throat feeling less swollen. Able to swallow with minimal pain. Cloraseptic spray continues to be a godsend, gargling cleans out the mucus. Rice porriage feels great on the throat and getting good nutrition by adding some tuna, corn, etc. Continuing with vioxx and antibiotics just because the doc says so. Cut back on the narcotics since I couldn't tell if they were really doing much either. Able to talk a little, but throat feels weird.
