Hi Andy.
I had the UPPP on 3/6/02. Pain lasted about a week, and I was back to work in a week and a half. I would say it took about 2 weeks before I could start taking down soft foods, but it got better much quickly.
As for the sleeping, unless you have a "large" obstruction at the area of the tonsils/uvula, I don't think this surgery is that great. I would say that before the surgery, I had 1 out of 7 "good" days. After the surgery, maybe 2/7. If you read down on the posts, you will see that I had to have the MMA/GA that many people seem to have to have after the UPPP.
If you're not feeling better in 4-6 months, I would suggest having your sleep doc ordering a "lateral cephalogram" to see what your hypopharyngeal airspace is. Lots of people seem to have a small airway and this leads to the closing that occurs during REM sleep accounting for the apnea.
Again, some people do well with the UPPP, others (like me) don't. I am young (30), and not obese, etc.
Hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck...speedy recovery.
Take care!
Dave
