Posted by westernjoe on April 04, 2003 at 20:23:59:Thought I would post my saga since it's slightly abnormal.
My sleep problems started with being unable to fall asleep due to some unseen noise or somthing that would wake me the moment I fell asleep. It gradually got so bad that could not fall asleep for a couple days in a row, then would colapse and sleep. Lead to strange anxiety problems too.
Got a sleep study and found that my apnea is in the normal range. But cpap solved all the problems and I've been using it for a year. The only way I can sleep without it is to drug myself into oblivion but that only works for 1 night.
Since I'm only 41 and not interested in using cpap for another 40 years, I started investigating the surgeries. It was immediately brought to my attention that I have an elongated uvula about .5 inches long. The ent I talked to wanted to do a complete uppp even though my tonsils are extremely small and obviously not the problem. He would not consider doing it without removing the tonsils. Would have to be done in the hospital and recovery would have been long and painful, and it would have cost about $6k. I'm a victim of SEBIS (self-employeed-bad-insurance-syndrome) and both of those things mattered.
So, I found another ENT who said, no problem, all you need is your uvula removed (RAUP is what he called it since he uses the RF instead of the laser). No problem with tonsils, big tongue, nose, airflow, etc - just giant uvula choking me.
$750 and 30 minuites and I'll be done. Sore throat for a week or 2. Will let you know how it goes in 2 weeks. Am so excited about getting my life back!
Don't get me wrong, cpap has saved my life, but why if there is a surgery that can fix it! I know the stories about others who have different issues, but at the least a surgery would probably greatly reduce cpap pressure.
