Posted by rkf on April 09, 2003 at 09:58:45:Finally had the MMA done last Thursday. Got there at 8:30 for a 9:00 am start. Due to an emergency and a few other minor ordeals I didn't get started until almost 3:00 pm. It took six hours to complete. They got me awake as soon as possible, the swelling at that time wasn't too bad. However, as any of you who have had facial sugery know, the swelling increases exponetially with time. By the time I was moved out of recover, the swelling had my neck around my jaws larger tham my head, my lips looked like raw Italian sasauge, bigger around than my thumb. Dozed a lot that first night but couldn't get comfortable, the darned nasal trumpets were a real pain in the.... throat. The swelling had hit so hard and the late finish prompted an additional night at the clinic. I've been using a lot of ice ans occassional heat pack and the swelling is now way down. The doctors have been amased at how fast it has gone done. Since coming home Saturday morning, I have only used one pain pill. The pain isn't what you might think, mostly dull ache from swelling and the darn rubber bands squeezing the arch bars together. The bands were put on Monday and I just got back from the doctor getting them tightened. I can take them off to eat but then I have to put them right back. The doctor has done over a hundered, his assistant is around 300. They said my teeth were the best natural fit prior to the procedure and should be just as good when we are done. All the alignments look great.
I am sleeping about two hours at a time and actually dreaming. Haven't done that in years. They said it bodes well for the recovery. The hardest part is putting up with the canker sores from all the tools and hands having been in the mouth. To eat two meals, I mix a METRx packet with juice then push an I.V. tube down the side of the mouth to the throat and fill up a 60ml syringe. Its better than starving. For dinner, I take off the bands and blend the heck out of a can of soup so I can eat with a spoon. It slow going but I am getting some stuff down. Drooling is another problem. I walk around with a towel wrapped around me at all times. Hope that stops before I go back to work on the twenty first. More later.
