Having the jaws wired seems pretty drastic. My surgeon said he has only had to do a couple that way. I had the arch bars attached during the surgery (Thursday) but they weren't banded shut until Monday. I am allowed to remove then to eat and rinse out the mouth but I only do for two meals a day, the rest of the nourishment is explained below. I could never take the darn pills when they are banded. Dissolving them in liquid is terrible, the taste make you gag. Anyway, the bands were single install (one lug top and bottom), one at each eye tooth and one further back each side. On Wed. the bands were squared up, two lugs top and the two immediately below. As the swelling goes down there is only a fifty percent change that the tension will have to be increased any more.
Now, as how and what to eat whem banded or wired. Get one of the large 60ml syringes and some of the tubing used for I.V.s. One end of the tubing will thread onto the "needle" end. Measure down about a foot and cut off the end of the tubing. A good spot is just to the needle side of one of the access ports (injection sites), this leaves plenty of room to fit your mouth. I have been mixing Ensure or one of the meal supplement packets from the health food store (choose one with L-glutamine as it slows down muscle lose). I use apple juice since it make the liquid a lttle runnier and easier to go down. If the swelling isn't too bad you can snake the tubing towards the back of the throat between the teeth and a cheek. Be careful not to snag a stitch, sometimes the tube will fit between the teeth. Fill the syringe and squirt slowly. The first few meals take a long time and you get worn out but it is actually worth it. Any liquid that can be sicked up in the syringe can be squirted down the hose. For the meaks that I take the band off, I have been blending chili, soup, stew, to make them really runny. Sometime I mix with beef or chicken broth. I will also eat a yogurt or jello cup when the bands are off. Good luck.
