Sorry to hear about the troubles. This is difficult because it is hard to treat the apnea (if that is in fact the cause) without a sleep study. Depending on the study, they might simply recommend a CPAP or surgery. I would certainly want to know things for sure before they started cutting on me.
One thing I did early on was have my wife observe me sleeping for an extended period of time (she drank many cups of coffee). I had her log how many times she saw me jerk.. changes in breathing and snoring patterns. Might be something to start with while figuring out a way to have a sleep study.
I am in the states, so I fortunately had the health insurance to cover it. They had a lot of questions early because I'm only 29 and not overweight, so I didn't fit the profile. But the study cleared that up quick!
