Possible break-through New Surgery

Posted by smokey888 on February 25, 2004 at 19:28:09:

A less invasive throat surgery than has been used for sleep apnea appears more effective at correcting the disruptive disorder, Taiwanese researchers announced.

Here is parts of what I picked up:

Only 55 patients (pretty low number) but showed and 82% success rate compared to the historical level of less than 50 percent found in earlier more invasive surgeries.

The report came from: Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taipei.

"..... the modified technique used in the study in the new issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology is called extended uvulopalatal flap surgery. It removes fatty tissues, soft glands and the tonsils ... but spares muscle tissue."

The report did not report why this surgery worked better but the patients snored less, less sleepy during the day and had higher blood oxygen levels.

This is all I know about this. You should verify this information on your own and get professional help in doing so. Repeat: get professional guidance about this as I am not a professional in this area.
