I went directly to the MMA. I suppose it is radical in terms of surgical complexity. Too, it seems a little over the top to have your jaw moved forward so far. The reality, though, for me was only a modest amount of pain, some discomfort and a level of lethargy that persisted for a good 2 months. My appearance change is so minor as to be little noticed. My nose is a little wider and now has a little slope. There was a residual benefit of fixing the scarring and frequent nose bleeds (I had septal reconstruction 14 years ago when I broke my nose play-fighting with my 5 yr. old). In hindsight and based upon all the info posted in this chatroom it seems to me that most of the peripheral surgeries are unsuccessful whereas the MMA is a homerun in the vast majority of cases. I did try the CPAP and dental appliances but didn't tolerate them well at all.

I should tell you that I started running again 5 weeks ago (2 months post surgery)and am up to 7.5 miles for my Saturday run. It may be my imagination but the running seems to be easier than ever before. I attribute it to my vastly superior trachea. Who knows. I would do the MMA again in a heartbeat and would have done it sooner had I known how well it would work for me.

I suppose it is good to be conservative but I think the MMA will be the first surgery of choice once the medical establishment starts become more
comfortable with the MMA and the medical journals start giving it the credibility that results already confirm.
