At least one posting years ago stated that apnea causes weight gain. I tink that I have the answer.

OSA causes reflux which irritates the tissues. It is difficult to scratch the airway tissues with the manual digits, but humans are very inventive. They scratch the offending tissues by eating and letting the food massage the irritated surfaces as it passes by. The problem is the patient frequently puts on weight increasing the severity of OSA.

For a description of how OSA causes reflux search for 'Herr' as author and apnea or reflux on Pub Med. PubMed will say 'no abstract available', but believe it. Just continue as usual.
