Posted by Sleepy Time Time on September 30, 2004 at 12:46:55:I found an ENT here who went to Stanford and says he followes the the Stanford protocol "in which we do a graduated surgery." He says he wouldnt do MMA until he has done the other procedures first,. Here is how he listed the order in which he would do them:
1)Coblation based turbinate reduction (similar to Somnoplasty)
-this would require only one treatment at the same time we do the sleep surgery when you are under anesthesia
2)Pillar procedure
3)UPPP
4)Hyoid advancement
5)Genioglossus advancement
6)Repose tongue advancement
7)Coblation-assisted base of tongue reductionThe above procedures would be "the first stage of surgeries for treatment of OSA," he said. "If they fail, then you go on to the second stage which is MMA."
Does that sound odd to anyone? Has anyone ever been told they had to first get Up3 and hyoid and tongue advancement and septo first, and only if they failed, THEN they could get the MMA?
He also said he peforms the MMA himself, even though he is not a maxillo-facial surgeon -- he's an ENT /phaangeal (sp?) surgeon who has fellowship training in head and neck oncologic sugery
So, I would like to hear any thoughts you folks might have on any of this.....
