No reason was given but after I looked at the follow up xrays, I suspect that the airway was just too small. In an upright position, my airway was about 5mm. That is smaller than a pencil. Typical is around 11.

The surgeon who did the HS and the GA was my ENT, also he is a sleep doc who studied with Powell and Riley. Part of my initial diagnosis was a measurement of the distance from the hyoid to some axis through the tongue. "Normal" is about 17mm; mine was closer to 30. Too much tongue down the throat. The thought was if me change that amount it may help. Neither of the procedures was painful and I was back to work within the week. The doc who did the MMA and my sleep doc had several meetings before actually setting up the surgery. The one who did the surgery sent all my xrays and other info to Powell and Riley at Stanford. The consensus opinion was I was a perfect candidate. Both jaws were moved 9mm.
