MMA 8 weeks out

Posted by seattlebill on March 17, 2005 at 10:22:38:

Hey out there,

This is the latest in my series of post-op posts. It was 8 weeks ago Tuesday that I had my MMA/GA at Stanford.

Just came back to work Monday, and was greeted by our usual 12-14 hour day. A little tiring, but doable. I thought I was building up a good deal of stamina. Maybe not.

Still slowly advancing my diet. Arch bar removal loosened some teeth on my mandible , so most of my food is still mush with some light chewing small bits (think 15 month old toddler food) for hope & interest. I was trapped at a venue over the weekend where nothing but hotdogs were available. Pulled that puppy out of the bun, morselized it to tiny bits with my fingers...best dang hotdog I ever had ! I've been told the teeth will stabilize after another couple weeks, and I should gradually advance after that.

Physically, I've lost 20-25 pounds (which is more than enough). I still have a residually numb lower lip, anterior lower gum, and chin. They are all sites of dysesthesias (pins, needles & burning sensations) which still bug me enough at night to require a half of an Ambien to start my sleep. Once asleep, I have no apneas and wake up without headaches or grogginess.

My mouth opens about 2 cm. Not bad, but not normal. I expect this to improve with slow stretching over the next few months.

Pain...didn't have it before. Now, having a little more mandibular pain at night. Maybe due to ? more talking, stretching, or advancing diet. Responds well to naprosyn (Aleve) and rarely needs T#3.

More pain. In the early stages of dealing with our lovely insurance company who are declining the entire procedure. I plan to react to this annoying tactic with persistence. Eventhough it is "out of network", my network could not offer this service...so I might ultimately have to hook up with attorneys to argue this (after all reasonable paths have been pursued). Urban legend has it that this large company only responds after the third letter sent to them.
Hmmm. Anyone have any words of wisdom in this regard ?

Bill
