Hyoid Suspension--Worth It?

Posted by Tired&True on April 08, 2005 at 22:17:21:

I was diagnosed with mild to moderate OSAS about 18 months ago. I tried CPAP and couldn't tolerate it. Six months ago I had UPPP/Tonsils/Somnoplasty/Turbinate surgery. Initially, I felt somewhat better rested but still not rested enough. Gradually I've been feeling almost as tired before the surgery and the headaches are worse again. The post-op sleep study showed that I still have mild to moderate OSAS, and my oxyhemoglobin desats still drop to a low of 83%. My ENT said one more option for me would be a Hyoid Suspension. He felt I wouldn't gain anything from a Tongue Base Somnoplasty as that area is open well. I would love to hear some feedback from others who have had this procedure done. Was it worth it? Did it help any? It looks like I'm out of other options. I'm not the 'typical' case with OSAS--I'm tall, very thin, so weight loss is not an option. I'm wondering if I'm going to gain any benefit from an HS procedure. Any advice and feedback on results would be GREATLY appreciated.
