Sleepless Diva:
I would suggest that you find a really good medical school or a clinic affiliated with a medical school that has a good sleep center and/or ENT surgical specialty. I had my trach done in 1985 or there abouts at a medical center affliated with the University of Minnesota.
If you go back to really old postings before the forem was split into CPAP and Non CPAP segments and do a search on "trach", "carolyn", "phil", "peaceful-river", or "jeff - with a trach", you will find a great deal of information and opinion regarding the pros and cons of a trach.
I had such severe apnea that I opted to do a trach and UPP simlutaneously. Once the UPP had healed, I went back in for a sleep study with the trach occluded. The UPP did not solve my problem, but the trach did.
I have had no serious infections. Once, I had some granulation removed and once I had some scar tissue removed. Ironically, if you get a cold, you can breathe thru your neck when you sleep, and it doesn't really matter that your sinuses get stuffed up or if your nose runs. The care of a trach is not for the squeamish, but it has been worth it.
Carolyn had some good advice as to how to cover a trach. Having a Montgomery tube, I can just wear a polo high neck t shirt and it will be covered. There are some necklaces based on Seminole Indian designs called gorgets that might cover a trach very well.
Sorry about this long post, but so little mention is made of trach's in recent postings that I thought I might put in more than two cents worth.
Pleasant Dreams
