WJ,

Yeah, the drill is ...at least for me...first get the consult. This determines your need for surgery and any additional tests or procedures that you need prior to surgery. Sign up for a surgery date. Comeback into town (usually 2-6 month wait) the day before surgery for your pre-op work-up (required by JACHO and most hospitals to be within a day or so of any major operation).

Get your MMA. Hospital stay 2-4 days. In town stay and back to the office 1-2 times within 10days. Go home. Return about 5 weeks later for removal of arch bars and bands, and late post-op check-up.

I think you'll have arch bars and banding not braces (if Dr. P works like his partner Dr. K). Therefore it is not a limiting factor before surgery. It is possible that at some late date after you have recovered, that braces may be needed. I think some surgeons (ie. Mike's surgeon from Boston) use braces pre & post op, not bands. This has its own advantages and disadvantages that you may want to ask about.

Yes, there is a wait...but not too long for these guys; they operate 3 days a week. As for the expenses flying in and out of town...I minimized some by flying in & out the same day for the consult, and for the arch bar removal.

As I say, your mileage may vary, but this was my experience.

Bill
