I am considering surgery, help!!!!!

Posted by Frank on April 21, 2005 at 11:35:17:

I was diagnosed with OSA 2 years ago. I was described to have a moderate degree of OSA, with approximately 180 apneic events. I started using the CPAP, immediately, and I did not mind it, and I got got some relief with it. Recently I stopped using it because of significant right nasal obstruction and allergies. I saw my ENT and he said that my inferior turbinate was partially obstructing the nasal passage way. He said that I could continue to try and use the CPAP with flonase, or I could elect to have the Uvulapalatopharyngoplasty and reduction of the inferior nasal turbinate. I scheduled the surgery, but have been reading more about all this recently. I read a posting that said this can be very dangerous becuase both airways cn be compromised. Also I am worried that I will get no relief with the surgery or that I will be permanetly effected by the surgery. How long does it take to feel completely normal. I feel that I do not want to use the CPAP the rest of my life for may reasons (girl friends or wife, travel, discomfort of sleeping with CPAP etc). I also recently had a day with PVC's all day long. I am also worried about Pulmonary hypertension, I have a family history of hypertension. I also have mitral valve prolapse and moderately high cholesterol. I am worried if I dont get the surgery that I will not be consistently complaint with using the CPAP, and years from now I will have significant problems. Please help me with some advice about risk/benefit, recovery time, personal experiences that are similar and opinions about what I should do.
