Bill,
My thoughts differ dramatically from some others posted on the board.
I might consult with a renowned university based physician...but I realize that he/she may not be actually doing the work in a training program with fellows & residents. A quasi-academic program where the attending of repute actually does the work is my bias.
My bias is also not always to choose the senior partner. Like curing meat or alcohol, the most aged may be too ripe. Particularly in sub-specialties where there have been generational changes in technique and approach. My strategy was to find the slickest private practice guy with the best stats and numbers. Optimally around 10 years out of training so he/she has the experience...yet the old school generation demarcation lands with those out of training in the late 80's...so not more than 20 years out of training.
It's ok to have Marcus Welby be your primary care doc...but folks from that era have different views on tissue preservation and the amount to remove cauterize, etc...
Secondly, I 'd never go to a place that hasn't had the staff who has seen many of these (the OR staff, anesthesia, nurses must see a ton of these to recognize problems when they see it).
Not at all based on data...just my experience and personal opinions. Take it worth a grain of salt.
Dr. KL says seek out a university program...but he himself is quasi-affiliated with one. Figure this one out.Bill
