Posted by sleepingchallenged on July 15, 2005 at 14:50:04:I have just been diagnosed with mild sleep apnea within the last month. I had two sleep studies done. One with and one without the CPAP machine. Since my diagnosis I have been given the CPAP for a one month trial. I am depressed, angry and frustrated. Everyone keeps telling me to just use the CPAP machine. I am using it for the one month trial because my insurance company requires it. I have already had trouble with the machine. The tech gave me a the Res Med Activa Standard which I did not like. I have already switched to another type, but I am still finding it difficult to use the machine. It takes hours to fall asleep and I end up taking the mask off (I wake up with it still running and on the floor). I am more tired now than before. I am going to continue using the machine to see if it gets better, but I am hoping that I will qualify for some sort surgery to help aleviate my problem. Again I only have an mild for of sleep apnea. I am still new to this world and not sure what the correct terminology is. But my doctor said it was very mild. I only have stoppages 10 times per hour for 17-22 seconds. My airway pressure setting is 8 cm H2O. I have had the CPAP machine for just over a week and I HATE it. I was hoping that there would be some sort of alternative for me since it is mild. I just don't see it as realistic for my life. I am only 31 and still single and can only think I will remain that way if I have to use the CPAP machine forever. I am only about 15 pounds overweight. I am working on the weight issue, but I just can't see using this machine for the rest of my life. I do have enlarged tonsils and uvula (my primary care physician is the one who noticed it during an exam and sent me to the Sleep Lab). I also have a receeded lower jaw and a large tongue (my dentist complains about my small mouth and huge tongue quite often). I have seen an ENT who suggested the LAUP or UPPP and tonsilectomy. He also said I have a deviated septum. To me it seems as though my problem is not weight related and I could benefit from surgery. Is there anyone out there in my position? Please help.
