My surgeon also requested that I go through the same process of braces for approximately 1 year. At the time it seemed like a life sentence, but he convinced me that it was the best thing for my long term dental health.

Also, since he was the doctor I wanted to use, I thought it would be best to follow his recommendation to provide the best possible opportunity for surgery success.

Time will fly by, so hang in there. If your teeth move quickly it could be less than a year. I ended up waiting only 8 months. One other tip, find out how far in advance your surgeon books his surgery cases. For me, Dr. Q was generally booked 2 months out, so I worked with the orthodontist to determine when I could go ahead and book the surgery. So at 6 months, the orthodontist said I would be ready in 2 months and I called to book the surgery. This was better than waiting 8 months to complete the orthodontia and then another 2 to wait on the surgeon's calendar (total of 8 months versus 10 months). I hope that makes sense!
