We have had the braces, no braces debate.
Keeping in mind everyone's situation is different, here are what I think are some basic guidelines.
1. Braces are better than archbars. They provide for a cleaner surgery, allow for precision alignment, can correct for any movement of teeth afterwards, and generally give more stability for alonger period of time.
2. Braces are also a pain in the butt. They cost A LOT, mostly not covered by insurance, dental or medical, takes lots of visits sitting next to teenagers, you are an adult wearing braces, they can be uncomfortable, etc, etc.
So, those tend to be the factors. The tie breaker tends to be your friendly health care provider.I am an odd case. All the computer modeling images showed that the surgery would probably make my upper lip too puffy. The way to fix that would be to take out four teeth and pull my smile back while keeping the airway open. Of course, you can't have braces put on for months after this type of surgery, so I had them put on before.
Turns out I am used as a rare example of how computer imaging can be wrong. No puffines. But I really appreciated how the orthodontist was really able to fine tune my smile put surgery. The braces also made sure my bite stayed great. So, in hindsight, I may not have needed braces, I am glad I had them, because it lowers the odds of having tooth movement down the line.
Don't get me wrong. Arch bars can be great. But any oral surgeon will tell you they prefer to work with braces.
End of sermon, kids.
