Posted by MissyJ on September 09, 2005 at 10:07:13:Hello. I had a consult with Dr. P at Stanford a couple of years ago, and am finally ready to seriously consider an MMA. I've had sleep apnea for almost 15 years (I'm 46, female, 5'6" and 140 lbs) and multiple surgeries over the years - UP3, hyoid advancement, genioglossical advancement, septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and repose stitch. None of it helped at all, as my sleep study this past spring was the worst so far. I've tried cpap off and on for years - am trying it again now - but rip it off after about an hour each night. So, the MMA.
My dilemma is this. I don't have some of the typical facial characteristics when MMA is recommended - no recessed jaw, no overbite, etc. And actually, I'm pretty fond of the way I look. I'm scared that the surgery will end up making me look like a cave dweller or something! I know it all depends on how much advancement needs to be done, but I've searched the web to try to find pictures of before and afters - and not just the ones that clearly are going to make the person look better! Does anyone know where I can find some pix? Or, can you describe the kind of changes you experienced? A few of you have said, "a slightly more pronounced chin," and I suppose that is enough information for a fella, but this really concerns me! Thanks in advance!
