Bob,
Urinary retention is a common issue for guys after any surgery/general anesthetic. You are not alone & it can happen after even more minor procedures. It is a drag...but, most often it won't lead to any long lasting problems. If you are old enough to have prostate issues (BPH) then you may get a prescription for medication that can help.
Dreams can be very vivid after surgery. They can be even more vivid on certain narcotic pain-killers (oxycodone containing pills/elixirs are well known for this...it is a second cousin of heroin). I generally took my return of dreams as a good sign that I was able to get to that level of sleep.
What do you mean by "smell sensitive?" If you mean that you become nauseated, that is a common side-effect of narcotic pain meds. You shoud try to get something in your stomach first before taking any. Also, there are anti-nausea meds out there that can help either way (if you become nauseated by smell with or without any medications). Unfortunately, there is no free lunch...there are consequences that can happen with any drug or procedure. Narcotic pain meds and anti-nausea meds (as well as some anesthetics) have been implicated in causing or prolonging urinary retention in those who are pre-disposed.
I think you are doing great to be back home. I didn't see "home" for 14 days after my surgery.
Don't let the catheter thing get you down...it'll pass in no time (no pun intended).Best wishes,
Bill
