Mike,
Your surgeon selection criteria posts are classics. I refer other people to them whenever I can...and refered to it myself to vet my MMA surgeon.
Surgeon selection for a UPPP seems to be more important than those in the industry (ENTs) let on. There are many technical details that can be tailored and individualized...and that can make all the difference. When my local ENT surgeon tailored my UPPP knowing that I would probably get the MMA anyway, I believe it resulted in less trauma, less pain, less swelling, and ultimately fewer side-effects & complications.
I totally agree, surgeon selection is important for a host of reasons. Both intra-op, and post-op. Someone who is unavailable post-op is just as bad as a mediocre technician intra-op (IMHO).
As for what comes out, can't go back in. Very true for the UPPP. It is irreversible as an operation. Obviously, for many other procedures, organs and grafts get plucked out and re-inserted all the time (even autologous bone graft material is used for most MMAs). Your point that a UPPP once done, can not be undone is well taken.
Thank God there is research about innovative products coming down the line ! Magnets ? Intuitively, I'm thinking that might be prone to over-coming many obstacles. The downer about that (and my physics is 20 years old and is very rusty) seems to be that magnetic fields can be easily disrupted and not stable. We're talking macro fields like power lines & microwaves all the way down to intra-cellular disturbances from electrolyte imbalances. It's fascinating stuff though...you're lucky to have interesting friends with insight into these developments.
Lastly, thanks for the info on where to donate my CPAP machines. I just sent the stuff yesterday. I hope it helps someone who needs it...
Send more info about the magnets...I imagine it is still proprietary so I imagine it'll be sometime before it can get out.
Bill
