Generally, most people with UPPPs have pain on swallowing...anything, including liquids and saliva. This takes 2-3 weeks to resolve. Until then, most people do not tolerate a regular diet with solid food too well because of pain limitations.
For the first few days (at least), most people are on some voluntary liquid-soft diet. Some people have so much discomfort that they won't drink much or eat for several days.
This is very individualized. I didn't have this much of a problem...although I was on a voluntary liquid-soft diet for a few days. Some have posted this procedure as being very painful.
Things to do are: 1)take pain meds on a schedule to pre-empt pain, and facilitiate eating and drinking. 2) stay hydrated, drink as much as possible 3) drimk liquid protein supplements if you find eating difficult.
Long term, spicey and acidic foods "sting" for some time. This resolves...over a few weeks or couple months. There is a percentage of people who either 1) have a foreign body sensation in the back of the throat that persists after a UPPP (from the scarring of the uvula) or 2)have a retrograde requrgitation of liquids up your nose (like soda fizz, only amplified). Much of these 'side-effects' gradually get better over a long period of time...but some do persist.
There are no issues about salty or sweet foods that I'm aware of...or have seen posted.
Good luck with your surgery,
Bill
(by the way, your surgeon should've discussed some of this with you already)
