Bariatric surgery for apnea?

Posted by Thunder Bay on December 26, 2005 at 14:57:24:

i am considering that stomach surgery for obese people.

i say this because my apnea didnt start until i gained a bunch of weight....i first went from 180 to 200, and as ikept gaining, the excessive sleepiness and brain fog and chronic fatigue got worse and worse the more weight I gained

i know, people jeer that surgery all the time, but i weigh about 260 now, which is about 85 pounds over my ideal weight, which more than "qualifies" me as being obese. They will do it for those who are less than 100 lbs overweight if there is another medical condition that puts you at risk, and apnea does that in my case, along with the high blood pressure

i know two really obese people who had apnea, got the surgery done, and the apnea went away. They were both a lot bigger than me, like 400 pounds, and one (a female) dropped 200 and the other (a male) dropped 150

drastic, i know, but this thing is killing me, i figure i need to take a chance on something out of the ordinary after 10 or 12 years of this thing ruining my life

and perhaps it isnt as drastic as MMA, and i might have a better chance of getting my insurance company to pay for this than the MMA, based on some of the strories i have read here. I dont have the energy to even work a full time job, much less do year-long weekly battle with insurance companies

anyone have any thoughts? I do realize that my having a somewhat recessive lower jaw could be a contributing factor, but I went 35 years with a mildly recessive lower jaw and no apnea, until i got fat

in fact, mine is so slight that, with my beard, you cant even tell i have a recessive lower jaw, it isnt acute enough to be noticeable to most people
