I would definitely research these procedures carefully.

While they have revolutionized some people's lives, gastric bypass surgery have a higher risk than most folks perceive. Even a young, healthy, and relatively lighter person like yourself can run the same risks of severe complications.

The lap banding procedure is an improvement, but is not done everywhere and not available to every patient (but is more suited to "smaller" bariatric patients). If surgeons don't do that, they might do the gastric bypass surgery through a scope. That will put you at similar risk for complications as the open version...but spare you many post-op issues.

Mike has a good point though. Like the MMA, getting bariatric surgery should be the last resort for refractory cases. Failed diet and exercise programs, etc... Unlike the MMA, bariatric surgery can really hurt or even kill you.
