Posted by eyeswideopen on December 28, 2005 at 01:41:56:I would like some advice please. I'm a 40 year old slim woman with a 4 month old baby. A year ago I had somnoplasty to my palate to try to reduce my social snoring - I did not have apnea. The somnoplasty treatment went wrong as I gagged and the probe hit the back of my throat and lower down by the tongue. This caused my snoring to become much worse and keep waking me in the night. I had a sleep nasendoscopy following this and an apneagraph which showed obstructions - 50% palate and 50% tongue base. Also had a polysomnography which showed that I had upper airway resistance syndrome. I then had a UPPP using coblation and radiofrequency to the base of the tongue about 2 months ago. This unfortunately doesn't seemed to have worked and I now still snore although more quietly but keep waking in the night gasping for breath. Also have a deep groaning sound deep in my throat which wakes me up. All in all I am getting around 3 or 4 hours sleep a night. This is really upsetting especially since I have a 4 month old who sleeps through the night (thank God). I am now seriously depressed, have no apetite and no libido. This is seriously affecting my marriage and social life to the extent that my husband and I are considering splitting up as he says he can't stand the fact that I am tired all the time and can't see life going on like this. I am due to have a cephlometric x ray done next week plus OPG radiographs to see whether I need to wear braces and then see whether it is feasible to advance my jaw to bring the tongue and the suprahyooid musculature forward to improve the posterior pharyngeal airway. I have tried CPAP but can't tolerate it as it keeps me awake all night and I have given it a long trial. I live in England where the procedures to correct Upper Airway Resistance are much less radical than in America but I'm not sure if they are as good. I am seriously considering after my x rays and another polysom to go to Stanford and see a doc out there. I have no insurance and this will all cost me about £30,000 (a lot of money). I feel that I am going mad and about to have a breakdown all due to the somnoplasty going wrong and scarring my throat. Am considering suing the guy who did it but this will take time and effort and I am trying to bring up a baby. I am extremely depressed to the point of suicidal and in despair that nothing will ever be done to correct this awful nightmare I am suffering. My whole life is tumbling around me and I dont' know who to turn to next or where to go. My husband and parents think it is "all in my mind" and want me to see a shrink! I can't persuade them that this is a real diagnosis after having a polysom. They think I am making a fuss about nothing. This is not helping. Please, please someone give me some advice. Should I just say to hell with it and go to Stanford to see the experts or keep faffing around with docs in the UK who push me from one ENT to another and don't really know what to do. Advice please from someone who is on the point of seriously loosing everything in my life. Thanks.
