In hindsight, I would probably have fought the out of network thing. It would have saved me less than 2000, though - everything but the surgeon was covered in network.

However, the insurance company collapsed in their resistance unexpectedly (after five months) and my surgeon had an opening in five weeks rather than the usual 8-10. I had waited so long that I just wanted to move fast and get it done (before I woke up and realized I was dreaming). Everything happened so fast that I just let it ride.

The mental effect also took me by surprise. I rely on my ability to focus, analyze, organize, evaluate, create - and I just couldn't do it for MANY weeks.
