It's not only about diameter, but also collapsability which is not easily measured. Besides, this 'diameter' varies throughout the airway and changes with neck position, gravity, etc.

Good Drs will also do a scope and have you make various sounds and motion to see what your airway does under different conditions. In the end, the Dr has to make a suggestion based on the data which is not perfect or complete. Science and art.

The Stanford Sleep folks have pressure sensors that can help them determine more than a regular lab. Not sure if that would help or not. A general life rule is "More data = good", but not always :)
