dental appliance before MMA???

Posted by Chinless Wonder on June 01, 2006 at 14:46:29:

Hi All,

I have an extremely small and recessed lower jaw and as a result my tongue sits far back in my throat. I'm contantly having food get caught when I swallow resulting in embarassing choking during most meals. I am not over weight, but I do have a terrible problem with snoring. I've been through the sleep tests and the CPAP was not a solution for me. I've been referred on for MMA surgery. However, upon going to the surgeon he wants to use a dental advancement appliance before doing the surgery to help determine if the surgery would be a good fit for me.

I've looked through several postings of people getting MMAs, but none of them mention getting a dental appliance first. The appliance is not covered by insurance and costs between $600 and $1200. Can anyone tell me if the dental appliance is standard practice prior to getting the surgery? I don't have this kind of money to shell out if it isn't necessary. Any input you have would be appreciated.
